National Geographic Your Shot Photo Walk

Your Shot is a community of photographers connected through the power of visual storytelling.

On a pier under the Brooklyn Bridge, Amy and her group practiced photographing the people walking by. She explains why, in long exposure photography, you have to be careful not to lose the "human entity," or context of the image. It's a balance between your camera settings and the scene you're trying to convey.

Photographers, staff, and members met on the pier before the photo walk for an ice cream social. Many of our members knew each other through their community photos and profiles on Your Shot, but had never met in person.
Perhaps one of the greatest lessons learned as we approached the midnight hour was from photographers Diane and Len. They told their group to never give up on a picture. Try many different compositions and then ask yourself, "How do I make it better?"

What We Learned
Amy Toensing
Ben is an award-winning photojournalist known for his conflict photography and his ability to get the shot no one else can. He is also widely regarded as a pioneer of mobile photography.

Ben took his group to the streets of Brooklyn to teach shooting techniques such as using your own hand to expose for your image, saying "It's all about reading the light." He also emphasized seizing the moment; when you see a shot take it.
Diane and Len are National Geographic landscape photographers that began collaborating in 1990. They explore issues of beauty, boundary, culture, and the control of nature.

The End
On June 14 three expert photographers and 31 Your Shot members came together for a late night photo walk. Inspired by the After Midnight assignment running at the time, we descended on the Brooklyn waterfront in search of making the best photos at night.
